Ball speed and positioning are key in billiard. It is even more true when it comes to Snooker, English and Chinese pool.

These cue sports require woollen napped cloths to achieve consistent and advanced shots.

To talk about it, we interviewed Gareth Potts, multiple Chinese and English 8-ball World Champion.

In this third of 6 episodes, Gareth Potts demonstrates what a Strachan cloth allows you to do.

A napped cloth

“The characteristics of a napped cloth is that the direction of the wool fibers run one way. When you rub your hand down, it’s really smooth. And then when you rub your hand back, it’s really sharp. You can really feel those fibers and what those fibers allow the cue ball to do is get the maximum amount of grip out of the cue ball.”

Strachan’s superior nap

“All of the Strachan range has napped cloth. All of the different models that they produce has the napped cloth, which of course has the grip and control that is required from the cue ball. The finer the nap is shaved down, the faster the cloth will run, but it allows the cue ball to grip inside those fibers. It allows the spin rotation to really grip the friction. And of course, that allows the cue ball for you to pot as for me as a professional pool player allows me to put the cue ball wherever I like. It also allows you to do some pretty incredible things with the cue ball.”
