Strachan is the World’s leading cloth manufacturer for Snooker, English and Chinese pool.
This company came up with a breakthrough manufacturing technique known as “The Nap” which is a permanent directional finish on the surface of the cloth.
Now one might wonder how Strachan still manages to preserve its competitive edge in terms of excellence and consistency compared to all the other cloths available on the market.
In this fourth of 6 episodes, Gareth Potts, multiple Chinese and English 8-ball World Champion, explains what makes Strachan stand out from all the other cloth manufacturers.
An ancestral manufacturing heritage
“The reason why no other cloth company is able to match the Strachan cloth is because simply Strachan cloth have perfected what they do over a 250-year heritage. They’ve perfected the napped cloth. Yes, there will be other cloths that have nap, but certainly not to the level that Strachan have. They’ve developed this cloth over such a long period of time, the precision and quality that it gives with the cue ball control. I’ve played on most of the cloths all over the world. No cloth gives the cue ball control like Strachan does.”
The superiority of Strachan’s nap
“When we talk about the grip of the cloth, the grip of the cloth is the cue ball rotating on the spot, gripping on the fibers of the cloth and of course going in the direction that you want it to go in. If there’s no nap, if there’s no fibers, the cue ball effectively has nothing to grip on. So therefore, with balls as big and as heavy as these Chinese 8-ball balls, the rotations would almost just spin on the spot and it’s very difficult to pot the cue ball where you want. That’s the reason why I think the cloth is the best.”
